The 2017 W.S. Cox Plate Winners
One of the highlights of the racing calendar is the W.S. Cox Plate, which was first run in 1922 and now has race stake money of A$3,000,000. The Plate is held annually at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia and draws crowd of racing enthusiasts each year.
The Cox plate is only run over 2,040m with weight for age conditions, and is hailed as the best race for middle distance horses in Australia and New Zealand.
The 2017 event was just held on 28 October and was won for the third year in a row by Winx who was ridden by champion jockey Hugh Bowman. This win by Winx was a closer than expected call but what a beautiful day for a nail biting race.
This third straight win by Winx has ensured she goes down as one of the greatest racing horses in Australia, and the A$3 million purse does not hurt either. Winx is only the second horse to win three consecutive Cox Plates since its inception; the first horse was Kingston Town, who last pulled this off from 1980 – 1982.
This win is also Winx’s 22nd consecutive win and makes her the highest stakes earner in Australia and a solid race favourite.
Winx managed to just win her third Cox Plate in a thrilling race held last week, in front of a sold out crowd at the Moonee Valley racecourse.
According to her trainer Chris Waller, Winx was in her finest ever form, and her team oozed confidence about clinching this third victory.
With a fidgety start at the starting block, all eyes were laser focused on this race favourite. After settling down, Minx and her jockey made their move just before the final bend. Taking the lead into the home straight, Minx seemed to be in her usual unbeatable form but an unexpected challenge arrived in the form of Humidor.
Humidor was suddenly flying toward the finish, with jockey Bowman have to stretch Winx to stay ahead and hold off Humidor, and just take the win.
This very nearly upset loss has not put a damper on the celebrations of Winx’s team, as they enjoy her amazing third win of the WS Cox Plate.
Pre Race Favourites
With her prior town wins in 2015 and 2016, Winx was the obvious favourite to win the 2017 Plate, with Aus and NZ racing tips leaning heavily in her favour.
Part owner Peter Tighe, was confident but also stated he respected his competitors and was working with Winx right up to the last moments before the race.
With 93% of the bets being place on Winx since the opening of betting after the 2016 race, some people did make a few flutters on other horses, like Royal Symphony and Humidor.
Humidor had been rumoured to be a possible challenge/obstacle to Winx third plate, proving this in the actual race last week.
